Roku remote not working? How to fix it

Updated . How we check these numbers

Quick answer: First work out which remote you have. A simple remote (no microphone button) uses infrared: clear the line of sight and fit fresh batteries. A voice remote pairs with the Roku: remove the batteries, press any two buttons, put them back, restart the Roku (unplug it for 5 seconds), then re‑pair by holding the pairing button, or Back + Home, for 5 seconds until the light flashes. Use a phone remote app in the meantime.

Step 1: Which remote do you have?

Roku makes two kinds, and they fail in different ways.

Simple remote Voice remote
How to spot it No microphone or voice button Microphone or magnifying-glass button
How it talks to the Roku Infrared, like a classic TV remote A paired wireless connection
Needs to point at the Roku? Yes No (most models)
Usual fix Line of sight and batteries Restart and re‑pair

Step 2: Fix a simple remote

  1. Move anything in front of the Roku or the TV’s sensor: soundbars, decorations, a stick hidden behind the TV.
  2. Point the remote straight at the device and try a few angles.
  3. Replace both batteries with a fresh, matching pair. Before putting them in, press any two buttons to reset the remote.

If the remote ever feels hot, stop using it and let it cool on a hard, non‑flammable surface without removing the batteries.

Step 3: Fix a voice remote

  1. Reset the remote. Remove both batteries, press any two buttons, then put the batteries back, negative end first. Rechargeable remotes: hold the pairing button (or Back + Home) for 20 seconds, wait for the light to stop flashing, then charge for at least 5 hours.
  2. Restart the Roku. Unplug it, wait 5 seconds, plug it back in and wait for the Home screen.
  3. Re‑pair. Hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the light flashes. No pairing button? Hold Back and Home together for 5 seconds. Wait for the pairing message on the TV.

You can check a voice remote’s battery from Settings › Remotes & Devices › Remotes, choosing your remote, then About. You’ll need a working remote or a phone app to get there.

Step 4: Use your phone while you fix it

Steps 2 and 3 need you to move around the Roku’s menus, which is hard without a working remote. Your iPhone can stand in: phone remote apps control the Roku over Wi‑Fi, so they work even when the physical remote is dead. Roku’s own app is free and suggested by Roku support for exactly this.

If the phone finds the Roku but the buttons do nothing, see how to use your iPhone as a Roku remote: one Roku setting can block phone apps. Need to get to your cable box or console in the meantime? Here’s how to change input on a Roku TV without the remote.

Which fix should you try?

Symptom Most likely fix
Works only up close or at an angle Simple remote: clear the line of sight
Stopped after the batteries died Reset with fresh batteries, then re‑pair if it’s a voice remote
Light flashes but nothing happens Restart the Roku, then re‑pair
Nothing works at all Use a phone app, then contact Roku support about a replacement

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Roku remote is a simple remote or a voice remote?

A voice remote has a microphone or magnifying-glass button. A simple remote has neither and uses infrared, so it only works pointed straight at the Roku.

My new batteries didn't help. What next?

For a voice remote, restart the Roku (unplug for 5 seconds) and then re-pair: hold the pairing button, or Back and Home together, for 5 seconds until the light flashes.

Can I control the Roku while I sort out the remote?

Yes. Any phone remote app on the same Wi‑Fi works without the physical remote, including Roku's free app.
